The application

Updated: Jan 30, 2022

I will try my best to outline the process in applying for the English Language Assistantship for Australians in Spain (this website also has useful information). This program is an amazing opportunity to be able to live overseas (and be paid)! The only requirements are that you are 18-59 years old, have either completed or have one-two years left of a Bachelor's degree, and have a clean criminal record. If that's you, then soon enough, you'll be teaching in English at a Spanish school for a minimum of 6 months to a maximum of 5 years!

As I said in my first blog post, I really should have started documenting this process sooner, however, I didn't want to start a blog and then find that I wasn't able to leave the country. Covid has made this trip a lot more difficult than it needed to be.

To begin with, this is program allows you to be a Cultural Ambassador for your country. The position is called a Language and Culture Assistant, or Auxiliar, in Spanish and is with the Ministry of Education, Spain. See the guide below for an overview of the program.

Step 1: Register with Profex.

Step 2: Upload documents (see Notes below).

Step 3: Complete the Foreign Assistants in Spain Program application (in Profex).

Step 4: Submit your application.

Step 5: Accept your offer. (This takes a long time, but you will get an email eventually.)

Step 6: Wait for the receipt of acceptance from your autonomous community.

Profex is the website which the Ministry uses to organise all their student internships.

Here is the guide (in Spanish) for how to register with Profex, along with an English walk-through video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUeYKmUd-b8&ab_channel=MinisteriodeEducaci%C3%B3nyFormaci%C3%B3nProfesional.

In terms of the actual application, here is a how-to guide (in Spanish) along with the English explanation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eI1ghuOXcGw&ab_channel=MinisteriodeEducaci%C3%B3nyFormaci%C3%B3nProfesional.

Notes:

- Although my program didn't start until the 1st of Jan 2022, the application period opened on the 27th of Jan (and closed on the 6th of April) 2021. So make sure you get organised as early as possible as you will need:

  • a cover letter (following the specific guidelines)

  • a reference letter (following the specific guidelines)

  • a passport photo

  • a valid passport

  • a Working With Children's Check or equivalent

  • maybe a CV too; I can't remember
