Day 133 (Patio Festival, Córdoba)

Spring in Córdoba is full of festivities! Córdoba, a town of 300,000 people, receives a million visitors during this period. The month of May kicks off with the May Crosses, then the Patio Festival, and ends with the Fería (Fair). The patio contest was initiated by the Ayuntamiento (town hall) in the 1920s and is a perfect time to experience Andalucían architecture by visiting the 50+ patios on display. The patios, central courtyards, are an architectural feature designed to counter the hot climate of southern Spain. Patios are filled with plants and fountains. While normally locked behind metal gates, the Pato Festival is the perfect way to witness the garden oases hidden in the centre of homes, official buildings, and convents.

The patios are free and open to the public from 11.30-2pm then again from 6-10pm (or until 8.30pm on last day). This year, the festival was from the 2-15th of May. Prepare to be swept away by the vibrant bougainvillea and the strong scent of jasmine!

We also bought 3€ tickets to climb the clocktower (previously minaret) of the Mezquita. Make sure you get there on time!

For dinner, we went to Doble de Cepa to watch flamenco. I was able to introduce my friends to some Spanish classics as well as see a live performance (all for under 20€ each)! You should try the patatas cortijeras (fried eggs with wedges and veggies), nuestras bravas (wedges with chili mayo), flamenquin serrano (deep-fried ham wrapped in pork), tinto de verano (red wine and lemonade), and vermu (vermouth).

A large group of us had made it out this weekend, including ten Auxes, and four Aussie friends. We stayed the night in Al-Katre again (I really like this place). I've said this before, but I'll say it again - I still find it amazing how easy you can travel around Europe!

Notes:

- There are maps available showing where the open patios are - I recommend visiting one or two routes further out of town (in addition to the two winning patios).

- I think Córdoba is underrated. If you have time during your trip to Spain in May, definitely try and make it out to this city.
