Day 5 (bikes & Chinese food)

Updated: Jan 10, 2022

My host mum was very kind and found me a second hand bike on Wallapop (the Spanish version of Gumtree). We drove to Torrox, a town known for having a large German community, to collect it, and found that the seller was a Swedish woman. Normally, I’d be able to hold a basic conversation pretty easily in Swedish, but after being immersed in Spanish, I could barely say ‘thank you’.

We then walked along the Torre del Mar beach for a bit. In Melbourne, there would have been plenty of people swimming and sunbaking, although, the beach was empty and no one was in the water...too cold apparently.

For lunch we had (Spanish) Chinese food. What a let-down. Spring rolls were the size of burritos and you had to ask for chopsticks. The family had also never heard of dumplings and they weren’t on the menu either!

Notes:

- Spanish families live very close together, if not in the same town, they won’t be more than a 40min drive away. I have met about 15 extended family members in the past 2 days.
